"The moment that the topic of the pre-European African past is raised, many individuals are concerned for various reasons to know about the existence of African “civilizations.” Mainly, this stems from a desire to make comparisons with European “civilizations.” This is not the context in which to evaluate the so-called civilizations of Europe. It is enough to note the behavior of European capitalists from the epoch of slavery through colonialism, fascism, and genocidal wars in Asia and Africa. Such barbarism causes suspicion to attach to the use of the word “civilization” to describe Western Europe and North America."- Walter Rodney - How Europe Underdeveloped Africa
sitting here doing my 2500 word essay on how colonialism impacted the third world and i’m fighting the urge to keep eating cos i’m eating more than i’m working, whilst simultaneously getting pretty frustrated about the history curriculum here. my second term of AS year we learnt about the british raj in india, and for the longest time we had to (no choice) learn a balanced argument on way british colonialism was good/bad
and now i noticed about 14 weeks of studying was for utter bullshit cause the majority of the “good points” about colonialism had a later far more negative result in regards to time and development. who the fuck starts building train tracks and leaves them unfinished, fuck the british raj and the queen too whilst we’re at it AND FUCK THIS ESSAY

There’s a hole in my heart and it aches for a vibrant Baghdad,
the day her glory returns will be the day it begins to heal
An ineffable ecstasy remains of your memories
Your history will ensure your inevitable victory
A land in which the Prophets had walked on and blessed,
A land which was once the Worlds Capital of thought
Baghdad you are the Mother of all Arab culture,
And our pride is placed on you and you alone.
Words are like poison on the tongue,
When I am asked to describe your nature
Whether it was the striped coloured road sides;
Giant palm trees which provided us shade,
The local bread seller whose smile glistened
even though much of his teeth were missing,
The scent of humidity and sand in the air,
Or the scorching hot sunlight, which my skin
still craves the touch of nine years after I
departed from your soil, the soil of the Gods.
How could we have forgotten the history of who you are?
Whether it was the Ancient Sumerians who understood
civilisation so well, it created the Code of Hammurabi?
Or the Babylonian astronomers, who learnt of the
stars long before any Western civilisation.
A Mesopotamian Archive is all that remains
Your artefacts live on till today, a beautiful reminder
of what once was, but it does not remain in your land, no.
Ancient Iraq, you are the only wonder of the world.
But then they came, and they pillaged you, and they ruined you,
They desecrated your beautiful image with bombs and bullets
They tore apart your very essence with no single remorse
We could not see, we could not hear, we could not breathe
They stormed in on the Cradle of Civilisation like brutal savages
Twice you were destroyed, at the hands of Mongolians and Americans
No smell of sand in the air now, just the scent of burnt bodies
History repeated itself, only a desire and a longing of what
was yours and what belonged to you.
There’s this common misconception that the Saudi government’s crazy sexist laws reflect the general views of Saudi society because there wasn’t an Arab Spring Saudi revolution. There wasn’t a pseudo ”revolution” because the West didn’t want one and opposition leaders and activists were bribed with small amounts of money to stay quiet. The ones who didn’t accept bribes got jailed a large amount of time, stopping any chance of progression. Majority of the crazy sexist laws don’t apply to the privileged business elite and Hejazis/Jeddah residents, most Saudi’s want to reform much of the system but the power system has been so indoctrinated into their mindsets that they believe it can’t be done. And the harsh reality is that it probably can’t.
